The Moving Up Day of the kids has come and gone.
Hubby and I promised them a gift, a reward for all their hard work. They have long chosen what they wanted us to give them, before they even broached the idea of demanding asking for these tokens.
The little boy asked for a small toy car (he has several dozens already!) while the little girl asked for a small inflatable swimming pool for summer. Hmmm… the little girl even wanted a personalized gift but changed her mind when she saw those colorful pools in the malls.
Today I will probably surprise them and get the pool. The toy car can wait until they can go with me to the mall again since I do not know what car brand the little boy has set his eyes on.

There have been a lot of gifts given and received that are great and practical like things that can be used for daily activities (like food containers and kitchen gadgets, wholesale insurance, gift certificates) such as there are those that are not practical.
I would not want to enumerate what the not-practical gifts are but you probably know what these are.
There is really no need to give lavish gifts like some people do. This year like last year, we gave small baskets of goodies with fruits and home-baked muffins. We even gave away candies to the children who come a-knocking on the gates for some Christmas tokens.
Gifts for the kids were wishes came true: they were asked what they needed and these were given to them. Yes, they knew what they were getting for Christmas 🙂 Corny but then again, at least they like what they get, right?

With Christmas 2009 just a few weeks away, it is no wonder malls are having possible gifts on display. Bazaars are happening left and right.
I do not want to dampen the joyous Christmas spirit but here in our country, at least the way I see it, Christmas will have a different meaning after all the things that happened to a lot of people and families.
Of course, husbands/male partners will still think of going to aisles that say “gifts for her” as would wives/female partners do. That is natural.
But for me who will be starting my Frugal Christmas year 2 for Christmas 2009, I hope to instill Christmas with less emphasis on the material things with my children.

Some people I know have already finished their shopping as of this writing although I know and I can feel that there are still lots who are cramming into stores looking for the affordable perfect gift to give to their loved ones.
We always say year after year that “Next year, I will do my Christmas shopping as early as September.” Yeah right.
So what is that so-called “perfect gift?”
There are so many gift ideas to choose from but in the end, the gift still will depend on what the receiver needs or would be able to enjoy. Or these would depend if the giver is spending a frugal Christmas like me.
A light rain jacket for someone who enjoys biking. A set of cookware for someone who enjoys cooking. Books for the bookworm. Puzzles and board games to keep children occupied. A new pup for the dog lover.

Lasang Pinoy Sundays for this week is about Christmas Goodies.
I would have featured a few of the Christmas donuts that we had for the past two weekends but these were too “westernized” for me.
I have decided then to feature the butterscotch bars that the kids and I baked last week. This was in preparation for my Frugal Christmas theme. Yeah, even if I still have to practice baking which means I will shell out more than I have to, sige na, pangatawanan ko na 😀
Ok, I cheated.
I used a ready mix butterscotch/brownie mix (whatever) for this. I don’t know, it tasted like how a butterscotch bar should taste like. It was a bit, a teeny wee bit crunchy on top and soft and moist in the inside.
All sliced pieces baked from the 9 x 9 baking pan were gone before 24 hours were up (should I mention that we still had a pack of food for the gods given to us during that time). Maybe these were good to be given as goodies after all 😉
