Bullrun

Been busy yesterday afternoon and last night watching a DVD of Bullrun, as I have Plurked this morning which of course can’t be seen since I have my time line set to private.

Anyway, in my Plurk thread, I wrote this about the team BMW M3 that I was rooting for:

been keeping myself busy: am watching Bullrun, a reality show car race from Montana to Mexico. There was a Filipino contestant (not so sure) there who…

who had to forfeit their place to another team because they have to go home since an uncle died. Before he left the show, he said that…

“Money is not everything” He was even wearing a Noli me Tangere* shirt then. To you, I say (rock) (applause) and (worship)

Bullrun is exciting. That my son refused to sleep and wanted to finish the whole series could attest to the excitement of the series. Or maybe he really is just really into cars.

The car he was rooting, a Nissan 240SX retired early from the game. I wonder if it was using a  supercharger because it was so powerful! It just so happened they weren’t able to fix the car on-site.

*Noli Me Tangere is a novel written by the country’s national hero, Jose Rizal.

Gift Ideas

Some people I know have already finished their shopping as of this writing although I know and I can feel that there are still lots who are cramming into stores looking for the affordable perfect gift to give to their  loved ones.

We always say year after year that “Next year, I will do my Christmas shopping as early as September.” Yeah right.

So what is that so-called “perfect gift?”

There are so many gift ideas to choose from but in the end, the gift still will depend on what the receiver needs or would be able to enjoy. Or these would depend if the giver is spending a frugal Christmas like me.

A light rain jacket for someone who enjoys biking. A set of cookware for someone who enjoys cooking. Books for the bookworm. Puzzles and board games to keep children occupied. A new pup for the dog lover.

Sipa, a Philippine Native Sport

I have never learned how to play this game called SIPA, the Philippines national sport. This requires agility and speed which I know nothing about.

Perhaps because I was a bit clumsy as a child who never learned how to to do jump rope moves not jump on Chinese garter being played during recess nor ride bikes, I wasn’t able to “master” games that require some physical prowess.

Sure I excelled in playing Jacks and running after friends in a game of “Tagged, You’re It” but that is the extent of how sporty I was.

I bought this toy for my children to play with but alas, they too are awkward about how to execute the moves. How would they know if I can’t teach them the moves.

I hope they can figure out a way on how to do this or I better ask hubby to demonstrate his moves, if he can still do these things 😀

Basil Benefits

We had a basil plant.

Yes, had because the plant died courtesy of those small white insects that seemed to feed on the fragrant plant. Coupled with that, ants infested on these small white creatures. I wasn’t able to take photos of these creatures but Googling them I was able to land to this page. Click here.

I knew I should have made pesto when the leaves were plentiful. This would have to wait until I get another plant or resolve to buy fresh leaves from the supermarket. I know I should have read pages like this one before I got the plant but that is water under the bridge now. Sigh.

Sungka

Sungka is an old Filipino game. This is also a popular game in other Asian countries.

The game has an elongated wooden board with seven pockets on either sides. Each pocket has seven shells in it.

At both ends of the wooden board are bigger pockets, called stores. One store is for each player, usually the one found on the left hand.

At the start of the game, both players will simultaneously choose to get a bunch of shells from any of the pockets on his side of the board. Each player will then store a shell on all the pockets moving clockwise. Each player will put one shell in his own store but not in his opponent’s store.

If the last seed is put in an empty pocket, then that player stops playing. If not, then that player keeps on playing, getting shells from the pocket where his last shell has fallen in and putting these in the holes and in his store.

There are still other rules regarding this game which is also called Congklak, click here.

Lessons Learned from the Ants

Ants are social insects that live in colonies that has a hierarchy of positions and duties.

Ants are very industrious insects. They labor when the sun starts to rise and continue their work until the sun goes down. They get all the food they can get for the colony and stuck these for the rainy days.

Ants know how to adapt to situations like when a block to their foraging ways happens, they try to find new routes to overcome the block. Crushed ants emit a scent that will make other ants scamper for safety.

They foster cooperation among themselves in foraging for food and fighting their enemies.

Humans can learn a lot from observing ants, starting with being industrious and saving for the rainy days.
