Philippine Flag

“Mabuhay!” means “Live long and prosper” which is what Filipinos greet their visitors. To you, I present the country’s flag.

The Philippine flag underwent several transformations through the years. A brief history of the present flag can be found here.

Philippine flag

The blue stands for peace, truth and justice. The red for patriotism, valor and courage. The white for purity and equality.

The three stars symbolize the three big island groups namely Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The sun with eight rays represents the first eight provinces who fought in the revolution against Spain which has ruled the country for more than 300 years.

The country went through many challenges and at present, we still are undergoing a lot of political turmoil from leaders who do not represent the symbolism of the flag and it seems that what our forefathers have fought and died for is still not clear amongst self-serving people.

By the way, fun hand-made Oceania flags are in an entry here.
