Cafe Munchkin’s Birthday Blowout!

Yes, Weng’s Cafe Munchkin had its first birthday last February 12! To celebrate this one-year blog anniversary, Cafe Munchkin’s resident chef is having a birthday blowout! Woohoo!

Here are the mechanics:

All you have to do  is post an entry on your blog about who or what you consider to be the greatest influence/s on your cooking, food preferences or views on food  (that is, if you yourself don’t cook) and how that influence comes through.   Don’t forget to link to this entry so I can get a pingback from you.  Then, come back to this post and leave a comment informing me that you have already posted an entry.  You have until 11:59pm (CST) of March 9th, that’s two weeks from today, to post your entries.

Ok, now here are my answers:

  1. Who do you consider the greatest influence on your cooking? I must say that both my parents are my influences in my cooking. Both can cook although they have different preferences. My father likes cooking with meat whereas my mother likes food with fish and vegetables. Their meals are simple but are very delicious, more like soul food or comfort food for me.
  2. My food preferences. I do not have food preferences but what I cook for my family mostly stems from inspiration and what I think they will appreciate more. Simple home-cooked meals do well for me because I am a working mom. We have not been having pork though for a long time now and if we do, these are far and in between. I mostly serve lean chicken and fish plus more vegetables and fruits.
  3. How do those influences come through? As I have mentioned, my parents cook simple home-cooked meals and that is what I do too.

Happy blog anniversary Weng! More food posts with wonderful photos 🙂

Fun Movies for Children

We recently got a few DVD movies for the children to watch.

One was Space Buddies which they have watched two or three times already which has dogs as stars in the movie. This is a sign that they love it because of the number of times it has been watched to think it was just Friday night that we got these movies.

The other movie we got was Bedtime Stories starring Adam Sandler a hotel handyman which was also funny and they understood early on that the stories told by the children were magically and coincidentally coming true. I just think they enjoyed the Jumanji (from the same director) better.

Still another movie they enjoyed was “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian“. They have almost forgotten about the first movie “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardobe“and I am sure they will watch that to refresh their memories.

Sago’t Gulaman for TriColore

I was a bit challenged with this one and since I can not find any tricolore food photo in my files that I have cooked/made, I decided to put this hastily-taken photo of a glass of Sago’t Gulaman. Gutom na kasi at that time kaya hastily taken, more like an after-thought, 😀

Sago’t gulaman. One of the Pinoy thirst-quenchers that seems to have taken a back seat because of the influx of sugar-laden soda drinks, tea-based drinks and other drinks called shakes with chemically enhanced flavors. This is perfect for summer, isn’t it? If not, a halo-halo will do just fine 😀

Gotta.have.one.like.this.today ->note to self.

Yeah and not think that I need some weight loss pills to get ready for the beach this summer 😀

Thank You, Papa and Mama

The theme for this Saturday is THANKFUL

I came across this quotation about being thankful a few days ago when I was thinking about the post I will make for the theme: “It isn’t what you have in your pocket that makes you thankful, but what you have in your heart”

And I say “yes, I agree”

I am thankful about so many things which I wrote about in this other PH entry

I am thankful for my parents who may not have much in their pockets (like me, lol!) but have big hearts with overflowing love 🙂

We do not have a mansion with spacious rooms and high-ceilings but we felt like royalty because in the eyes of my parents, my brother and I are both the little prince and little princess 🙂

The home which is the witness of many wonderful moments is in bad shape and needs major repairs but we are hopeful that everything will fall into place 🙂

Thank you God for giving me a wonderful family 🙂

Fancy Birthday Cakes

Birthday celebrations and parties have come a long way. Birthday cakes too, are now more fanciful and detailed they look more like storybooks than cakes.

No kidding.

Take a look at this Winnie the Pooh inspired cake with the Honey Tree and Roo on the side where the photo was taken:

Nice right? It looks like a book that comes alive (well, it is almost the size of a book). It is colorful and looks  three-dimensional.

Do you agree?

Banana and Cheese Turon

EATS a WRAP!

I was feeling a little worried that I would have to go order myself that wrap in one of the fast food nearby.  I was also tempted to buy a shawarma, warm, cheesy and spicy. But wait, these are not Filipino foods so I thought long and hard because I knew I have something in my files and so I have!

Very simple, very Pinoy and very tasty: our home made Saba con cheese turon 😀

How to make these? Simple and here is how:

First of course, get some ripe bananas using the saba variety:

A little overripe is ok. Cut these bananas into four pieces.

Cut the cheese like little cheese sticks, or the size of French fries.

Put the sliced banana and cheese together on a wrap (lumpia wrapper, store bought) and sprinkle with a little sugar. We use muscovado sugar variety at home.

Fry these banana and cheese turon in a hot skillet and you will have:
